D20 Boule Bash

D20 Boule Bash (the name may change) is a unique game, making it difficult to compare with other games. Within the game, the objective is to predict the outcome. The outcome is determined by a number of dice, with the 20-sided die being the most important (hence the presence of D20 in the name), but also by cards that influence the outcome. Think of cards that multiply the current outcome by the number on the 4-sided die or cards that allow a die to be re-rolled. Additionally, dice can be thrown against each other to further alter the outcome.

The idea of the game is clear. However, it is still largely a puzzle to give it a proper implementation. The current, best-working version has a sort of tug-of-war mechanism. Players must predict how often the number will exceed 20. See 20 as the midpoint, with a rope on both sides. For example, if the number comes to 23 through the D20 + cards, then it has gone over 20 once. If the number then comes to 8 through a card, it has gone over 20 a second time, on the way back. This makes it more likely that players will make a correct prediction than if they had to predict the exact ending number.

This current version seems to work, but leaves many questions, such as: How many cards can players play? Are these upside down or face up? Can multiple players make the same prediction? Does rolling the dice add value?

For that reason, it will take some time before the game feels complete. Positive feedback has already been received, as it is such an unusual game that it feels genuinely 'fresh' – but they also acknowledge that a lot of fine-tuning is needed for it to be truly good.

Perhaps it's an interesting tidbit that the game, as often happens, was whispered to me by my subconscious in the form of a dream.
As briefly described under ‘Projects & Games,’ the game is suitable as a tool to practice arithmetic. I also plan to introduce it there, as schools often look for playful ways to teach.
